Starr is a solid red dog that does not carry the merleing gene so her coat stayed one solid red color.

Sadie is a light colored red merle with dark red spots. The merleing gene has taken this red dog and added shades and hues of red to where solid color would be.

Annie was a solid red dog that does not carry the merleing gene so her coat stayed one solid red color.


Thowra of BellaHara

Shepherd Spots - No
Parent color - Red Merle / Red tri

Thowra is a very dark red merle with a split face and no copper. The merle pattern is only present on the right side of his face, front and rear legs. Pictures courtesy of BellaHara North

There are genetic tests that can be performed to determine if an Australian Shepherd is a carrier of either the red gene or the dilute gene.
